爱国主义教育工作是思想政治教育工作和社会主义精神文明建设的重要内容。邓小平在长期的革命和建设实践中非常重视爱国主义教育工作。在新时期，他把马克思主义基本原理与中国社会主义现代化建设实践相结合，将爱国主义教育工作贯穿于具体的工作实践中，并做出了重要的历史贡献：确立了新时期爱国主义教育工作的重要地位；提出了新时期爱国主义教育工作的基本要求；阐述了新时期爱国主义教育工作的主要内容；明确了新时期爱国主义教育工作的对象；探索了新时期爱国主义教育工作的有效方法。

Patriotic education is the important content of ideological and political education work. Deng Xiaoping paid much more attention to the patriotic education in the long-term practice of revolution and socialist construction.
