The activated sludge represents a huge reservoir for antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Owing to the wastewater fluctuation, annual maintenance and storage requirement, the activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) may suffer from substrate deficiency (i.e., starvation).
