Funding Pyroptosis is a type of programmed cell death (PCD) pathway distinguished by inflammation. It is activated by specific inflammasomes. Once activated, it causes the physical breakdown of the cell, along with the discharge of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-18 (IL-18). Abundant evidence has demonstrated the existence of pyroptotic cell death within atherosclerotic plaques, which has significance for the development of atherosclerosis (AS).
