Transformation represents one of the most important pathways for the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which enables competent bacteria to acquire extracellular ARGs from the surrounding environment. Both heavy metals and irradiation have been demonstrated to influence the bacterial transformation process.
