Transparent or translucent Ce3+:YAG single-phase ceramics and Ce3+:YAG/Al2O3 ceramic composite were prepared by simple sintering in flowing oxygen at atmospheric pressure. The sintered samples presented similar optical transmittance spectra as those sintered in vacuum except the oxygen vacancies related absorption band peaked at 320 nm. SEM morphology of the ceramic plates showed dense microstructures when sintered at about 1700 °C, and the mechanism of densification in oxygen atmosphere was analyzed.
