A new technology is described in which infrared thermography is used to investigate the necking phenomenon in the fiber drawing process. The change of temperature and diameter during the necking process has been determined accurately online by an infrared camera with 18 μm close-up lens. The infrared thermal images showed that self-heating of the fiber only occurred in the necking region.
