五四新文化是革命文化的源头；新民主主义时期革命文化继承五四新文化爱国主义传统，形成独具特色的政治文化，这种政治文化与革命斗争互相促进，为革命的胜利立下汗马功劳，但五四时期以启蒙主义为特征的精神文化传统萎缩了；社会主义时期的革命文化在经历了曲折的探索过程之后，政治文化趋向成熟，物质文化得到重视，但精神文化滞后。重视政治文化、集体主义和传统是革命文化的突出特征，精神文化、个性主义和文化创新有待加强。革命文化是一个大系统，需要三个子系统互相促进方能永葆青春。

The New Culture of the May 4th Movement is the source of revolutionary culture. The revolutionary culture during the new-democratic revolution carried forward the patriotic traditions of the New Culture and formed characteristic political culture.
